Hillbilly fundraiser is Saturday

The annual Hillbilly Comedy and Variety Show is set for Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. at the Sparta Elementary School auditorium.

The event is sponsored by the Alleghany County Planning Committee and serves to raise funds for several local charities and organizations.

Admission to the event is $5 per person, with children under 12 admitted free.

Refreshments for the event will be provided by Gap Civil Head Start. Agnes Joines will serve as the master of ceremonies and numerous performers are scheduled to appear on stage.

Acts ranging from old rock and roll and country music impersonations to comedy, acting, dancing and ‘clowning around' will be featured during the evening.

The show typically lasts for several hours.

Acts include Dick Moore, Brian Finney (as Buddy Holly instead of Elvis this year), The Jubilee Dancers and the American Heritage Dancers, Donny McCall of Alleghany Community Theater, the ever-popular Rescue Squad Soggy Bottom Boys, Dorothy Brooks as Tanya Tucker and many, many others.

For more information, contact the planning committee at 372-7284 or Joines at 372-4591.
