The Alleghany County Chamber of Commerce announced a $10,000 grant that has been slated to bolster economic development efforts at the county commission meeting Monday.
Joining forces to apply for and administer projects through the funding will be the chamber of commerce, the Sparta Revitalization Committee and the county.
Leanne Murray, executive director of the chamber, presented the grant — and the plans for spending the money — to the commissioners Monday afternoon.
Murray said the grant is coming from Chester Pankowski at the Center for Regional Development — EDA University Center — at Western Carolina University. She said Tuesday that she has received written approval of the grant, which was only verbally approved as of Monday night.
However, Murray said that the time limitations on the funding necessitated getting the money from the county right away to begin. "The funding is offered as a reimbursement for money already spent on economic development," she said, noting that the county would need to approve the funding and then be compensated when the grant money arrives.
The latest date for the reimbursement is April 12, 2002 and any projects would need to be finished by March 31, 2002.
