Town tries to fill void left by Bristol plant by adding new water customers

Water line extension planned for U.S. 21

The Sparta Town Council voted last week to extend water service southward down U.S. 21.

The action followed a request to extend water to Country Junction store. Council also authorized Town Manager Tom Douglas to negotiate further extension of water to potential customers such as BCB Trucking Company, Truline Truss and Joines Trailer Park.

In addition, individual home owners will have the option of connecting to the new lines if they live near its location. Water and sewer customers are typically required to install and maintain their own lines to the town's line.

Douglas said Paul Wagoner, who just sold Country Junction, was faced with a requirement to put in a leak detector. Wagoner offered to contribute $10,000 toward the extension. Douglas said that would cover about one-half the equipment cost of a six-inch line, or about one-third the cost for a 10-inch line.

Officials favored the 10-inch line, as it will provide for further expansion of service in that direction.

"It's a false economy to run a small water line," said Mayor John H. Miller.

Council member George Mack Irwin, who made the motion to have Douglas arrange the extension, agreed.

Douglas said that once Bristol Compressors leaves, about 1 million gallons of capacity will be unused. "Clint Bedsaul (owner of Truline Truss and BCB) and Joines Trailer Park want water. We could ask for a contribution from each one and go on out there."

Miller said, "It seems like the town is growing in that direction....I really think this is a forward step for the town."

Douglas later said that there has been no talk of annexation in that direction.
