People from around the area came to Sparta on Sunday for a peaceful and silent abortion protest.

Holding signs that said, "Jesus Forgives and Heals," and, "Abortion Kills Children," protesters stood silently along the sidewalk from the area near the Presbyterian Church to the edge of the parking lot of the Alleghany Campus of Wilkes Community College.

The event, always held on the first Sunday in October, is a national effort to raise awareness about abortion.

About 30 people showed up on a cool and breezy October day for the event, termed the "Life Chain," which is held annually.
