A New York native will be serving Alleghany, Ashe and Watauga counties as an alternative agriculture agent with the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service.

Richard Boylan, who currently resides in Todd, will spend time in all three counties. He will be in Alleghany County on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Boylan, who started on the job Aug. 15, was born in Staten Island, N.Y. and attended college at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio. Boylan studied environmental science and biology, receiving a bachelor degree.

He then attended SUNY College of Science and Forestry, where he obtained a masters degree in environmental science.

Boylan had very little experience in gardening prior to attending Antioch College, where he worked on an organic garden as part of his studies.
