Schools land $125,000 grant for technology

The Alleghany County School System has been awarded a $125,000 grant to fund the "Alleghany Community Technology Learning Center," which will be operating within the A. Anderson Huber Cyber Campus and the Alleghany High School Media Center.

The announcement was heralded by the N.C. Department of Instruction's Division of Instructional Technologies earlier this week.

"We are elated that we were one of only 23 Category I districts within the state to be selected," said Sally Chitwood, Director of Curriculum and Instruction with the school system. "As a Category I district we are classified among the greatest need education agencies — those school districts with 20 percent or (more) children living in poverty. This facility will be of immeasurable benefit to our students and their families."

Designed to provide a conveniently located center where students, parents and community members can easily and regularly access a variety of technology-based and other resources addressing educational needs during after-school hours, the new learning center will be open beginning Nov. 1 and will be open thereafter Monday through Thursday from 3 p.m. until 9 p.m. and on Friday evenings and Saturdays when necessary.

Assistance in procuring appropriate reading materials and completing homework, enhancement of community literacy and job preparedness and opportunities to participate in GED, college and continuing education courses will be available. Other planned items include technology instruction, community outreach and cultural enrichment programs.
