The new M.D. in town is a product of Sparta and Alleghany County — home-grown and home-sponsored.
She sees that as an advantage. "I'm really happy to be back in the mountains," said Dr. Denise Absher, "providing medical services to the community, to folks that are friends that I grew up with, being there to provide care when they need it. It's a unique opportunity, knowing the families....
"I've always loved living here. I saw medicine as something I can do that would allow me to come back to the area," she said.
Absher works with Dr. Georgia Latham in Sparta at Tarheel Family Medicine, formerly known as Latham Family Practice.
Absher is technically not a native. She was born in Lancaster, S.C. while her father was doing road construction there. Her family is originally from this area, however, and they returned when she was two months old. "Basically my whole life, I've lived here," she said.
