The local 4-H program has received a $75,000 grant to support after school programs for middle-school age youth. The program, which is called 4-H SOS (support our students), will in turn help support after school programs at Piney Creek, Sparta and Glade Creek elementary schools.
Local 4-H Agent Felicia Joyce said that the program is a part of former Gov. Jim Hunt's initiative to make this state first in education. The program creates a partnership between the North Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, local schools and the Alleghany 4-H program.
"We know that the most difficult years for our youth are the middle school years," she said.
