Several charitable organizations have been in the forefront of providing help following the terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington, D.C.
One of the most prominent is the American Red Cross. Five volunteers from the Red Cross' Wilkes-Alleghany chapter left for New York last week following the attacks. They included three from Wilkes County — two nurses and one mass-care specialist — and veteran volunteers H.S. and Peggy Williams of Ennice.
Chapter director Russ Pearson said the Williams left Sept. 13, the day after the disaster, and will be in New York at least two weeks. Attempts to reach the couple in New York were unsuccessful up until presstime Tuesday. However, the Williams' daughter, Marty Mitchell of Raleigh, said Tuesday that she had heard from them. "Mom said it was just awful. She'd never seen anything like it," said Mitchell. She said the days have been long for her parents. "Some days they hand out food, some days they help people find aid," she said. They have also handed out some leaflets with information on coping with the tragedy psychologically.
