Vets of New River fight urge continued vigilance

Standing on the banks of the river they had fought to save a quarter-century ago, officials reminisced and commemorated their victory, while encouraging continued vigilance.

New River sweep is Saturday

Last Saturday's 25th anniversary scenic celebration is not the National Committee for the New River's only big event this month for which it hopes for a lot of public participation.

Wheel tax rescinded

The Alleghany County Board of Commissioners voted to rescind the economic enhancement tax, better known to the public as the wheel tax, at their meeting Monday evening.

Town sets priorities for talks with Bristol

The Sparta Town Council last week endorsed the manager's position that individual contributors, not the town, should be the priority in seeking recompense from the Bristol Compressors incentive package. An $8.5 million incentive package helped bring Bristol to Sparta in 1995. Of that total, $5.7 million had been paid as of August.

School board looks at safety issues

The Alleghany County Board of Education last week approved principals' safety goals and objectives. The school principals presented their objectives to the board at its Sept. 5 meeting.

Walker named tax chief

Long-time tax office employee Mary Walker was named as the county's new tax administrator Monday night by the Alleghany County Board of Commissioners after a lengthy closed session.

Nile Road closing extended

A bridge closing on the Nile Road has been extended until Sept. 28, N.C. Department of Transportation officials said on Tuesday.
