N.C. Health Choice for Children opened up last month for 11,400 children who had been on its waiting list.
About 15 children here are now covered as a result, according to Sandra Ashley, director of the Alleghany County Department of Social Services.
Established in 1998, Health Choice uses a combination of federal and state funds to provide health insurance for children whose families earn between 100 and 200 percent of the poverty level — too much to qualify for Medicaid, but not enough to afford private insurance.
Poverty level is $17,652 per year for a family of four.
