Alleghany students' scores on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) rose for the third consecutive year.
While state scores were also up, Alleghany High School seniors scored better than the state average this year for only the second time in 12 years. County and state SAT scores gained ground on the national average, which showed only a slight increase from last year.
Alleghany's average total score was 995, up from 960 in 2000. The state score rose from 988 to 992, while the national total went from 1,019 to 1020. The highest possible score on the test is 1,600.
In the math portion Alleghany's students went from a 479 average score in 2000 to 487 in 2001. Statewide, the rise was from 496 to 499, while the national average held at 514.
Alleghany's big increase was in the verbal score, from 481 to 508. North Carolina students rose from 492 to 493, while the national score rose from 505 to 506.
Administered by the College Board, the SAT is used by many colleges to help determine how a student may perform and is one factor in considering college applicants.
