A test well for methane at the former site of the Alleghany County Landfill has drawn little useable gas, county officials learned at their meeting on Aug. 6.

"We have yet to see hardly any methane produced out of the test well," County Manager Don Adams told the commission. Methane is produced as garbage decomposes underground in capped landfills, such as Alleghany's. Methane is a gas that is about half as flammable as natural gas, but still is useful for heating and other burning applications.
