Sparta man cleared of sex offense charge

Grand Jury Clears Murphy

A Sparta man was cleared Aug. 6 of an attempted sex offense charge, according to documents on file at the Alleghany County Courthouse. Robert "Bob" Wright Murphy Jr., 41, of Sparta, was charged in March with attempting to engage in a sex offense by force with a Mouth of Wilson, Va. woman. The alleged offense occurred Jan. 21, and Murphy was arrested March 7.

The charge was dismissed by the state in Alleghany County Superior Court. The dismissal occurred after the grand jury returned no true bill of indictment on the attempted second degree forcible sex offense charge, which also included attempted crime against nature and assault on a female. Murphy's case was the only one of 37 cases for grand jury action last week in which an indictment was not returned.

The remainder of the court report appears on Page 9A of this week's edition.
