Michael Wayne Strickland was sentenced to probation, but no jail time, for the shooting of Angela Dawn Petty last January by Judge Dennis J. Winner. The brief trial, held Monday in Alleghany Criminal Superior Court, ended through a plea-bargain agreement.
Strickland was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury for shooting Petty with a 9mm handgun outside NAPA Auto Parts on North Main Street in Sparta on Jan. 24. Wounded in the chest area, Petty spent almost a week at Alleghany Memorial Hospital following the shooting.
