One candidate filed for one of two open seats on the Sparta Town Council, while John Miller remains the only candidate for mayor as of Tuesday at presstime. The filing period for the three positions will end Friday at noon.

Retired Sparta Elementary School Principal John Brady filed to run for council last Friday, July 27. Brady, who lists an address on Westview Drive, is seeking one of two available seats.

Long-time councilman C.J. Hendrix and Randy Williams are both up for re-election, but neither had filed to run as of presstime Tuesday.

Sparta Town Manager Tom Douglas said that the foundation on Williams' new home has been poured and that he will soon be moving into it. The new home is outside the town's limits, Douglas said, therefore, Williams opted not to run again.

Meanwhile, Douglas said Hendrix may yet decide to file for his seat, but he has not committed to do so. "We'll just have to wait and see," Douglas said.

While the town council election is currently one candidate short, Douglas said he believes more people will file at the last minute. "Somebody will run," he said. "It's too good a job for somebody not to want it."

Filing opened for the town's election on July 6.
