The New River Cottage Inc. board of directors on July 24 approved a plan to borrow money to build its own group home for mentally retarded adults.
The building will be located behind the ADVP (Adult Developmental Vocational Program) building on Health Services Road, said Harrol D. Blevins, executive director of Alleghany Group Homes and New River Cottage, and will replace facilities the organization has been renting on Duncan Street.
He said the home is a separate incorporation from ADVP. The home will be an intermediate care facility for five people. "Our clients are severely or profoundly mentally retarded," said Blevins.
"This will be built to specifically accommodate our people." He said the land is zoned residential with some special provisions.
Construction of the 3,000-plus square-foot building will cost about $330,000, he said. "The financing is in place."
Of that figure, $250,000 is to be funded with a low-interest loan from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's rural development branch.
By a 4-0 vote, the board approved a resolution authorizing the execution
of forms necessary for the loan and agreeing to the loan terms and
conditions.
