Florida teens camp at Whitehead farmBy ROBBY LUCKEStaff Some people think of Florida as a place to "get away from it all." But for a group of Florida teenagers who want to get away from the routine for awhile and enjoy spiritual refreshment, encouragement and camaraderie, their annual destination is here in Alleghany County. Last week the youth group from First Baptist Church in Auburndale, Fla. held their yearly camp at Michael and Becky Neff's acreage in the Whitehead area. Sixty-one youth, from seventh through 12th grade, along with 15 adult leaders, made the journey. Five adult leaders from this area were also on hand. |

The church's camp trips began about 20 years ago, according to David Simmons, one of the camp leaders. He explained that his wife Sally is Becky Neff's sister; thus the Neffs make their property available to the group for the camp week each year.
This year's camp theme was "Becoming an Eagle," from Isaiah 40:31. Miranda Murphy, one of the adult leaders, said leadership, morals and maturity were emphasized. The week's activities included "family group time," an hour of Bible study each day, hikes and recreation. The group went to Carowinds Thursday.
Morning chapel was held at the farm house, while chapel was held each evening at
Liberty Baptist Church in Whitehead. Friday evening's chapel service, which is a
culmination point for the week, included communion. Instruments including guitars
and drums were set up at the church.
