Farrelly is new Sparta assistantBy ROBBY LUCKEStaff The newest face among local school administrators is also new to this part of the country. "I always wanted to move south," said John Farrelly (pronounced FAR-lee), Sparta Elementary School's new assistant principal. "I was not fond of the long New York winters." Farrelly comes to Alleghany from Ithaca, where he has served as principal of Immaculate Conception School, a pre-kindergarten-through-eighth grade private school. The Alleghany County Board of Education last month selected Farrelly to replace Susan Murphy as assistant principal. Murphy was previously named to succeed Principal John Brady, who retired this year. |

Leaving the Empire State, where he had spent his entire life, was not easy. "I put a lot of time into my school. As an administrator, I worked seven days a week, sometimes 14 or 16 hours a day. It was a tough choice to leave," said Farrelly.
"I was pretty thorough with my homework." He visited this area three times before he made the decision to relocate.
The quality of the Alleghany school system helped sway him. "I was very impressed with the administration and staff. I view this as an excellent institution....The facilities are excellent....
"I saw myself as fitting in with the community here. I kind of fell in love with
such a pretty area," he said.
