School officials grappled for two hours in two different locations over what to do about elevation/drainage concerns at the new Alleghany High School wing during a June 18 emergency meeting of the Alleghany County Board of Education.
With the beginning of school less than three weeks away, and equipment already being moved into the new gymatorium/classroom complex, the board debated at length about possible courses of action, some of which could further delay the timetable for having the building ready. Members agreed the situation could represent a safety hazard, especially in the winter.
At first, board member Steve Carpenter was adamant about summoning a representative from the project architect, Orkan Architecture of Charlotte, immediately. "The key hinges on the architect. We're going to have to get the architect up here," he said. "It's his responsibility to get it to a certificate of occupancy. We need the architect to tell us: is it or is it not built to specifications. It it's not, tell the contractor."
Later, however, the board voted unanimously to, of its own accord, reject the drain

Construction of Jefferson, redo it.
