Filing opened for two Sparta Town Council seats and the office of mayor last Friday, July 6, at noon.
The filing period will end on Friday, Aug. 3 at noon.
The two council seats are currently occupied by councilmen Randy Williams and C.J. Hendrix, while John Miller is the town's mayor.
Miller has been in office since 1982, while Hendrix has served since 1973 and Williams was elected in 1993.
So far, only one of the incumbents has filed for re-election — Miller filed Monday.
The town has contracted with the Alleghany County Board of Elections to run its elections, effectively eliminating the town board of elections.
This year's town election will be held on Nov. 6 and the polling place will
be the Sparta/Alleghany Volunteer Fire Department Building on Cox Street.
To file to run for a town council seat or for the office of mayor, stop by
the Sparta Town Office at 58 South Main Street or go to the Alleghany County
Board of Elections office, which is located on the second floor of the stone
building behind the Alleghany County Courthouse.
