Board OKs temporary budget

The Alleghany County Board of Education decided last week to wait and hope for favorable results from the state budget process, rather than taking its cue from the county's 7.9 percent reduction of its budget request.

The board approved a temporary operating budget for 2001-02 on June 29, less than two days before the new fiscal year began. Finance Officer Karen Leys said the board could amend the local fund in July.

The board's action followed the finance committee's recommendation. "We do not want to decide the local fund based on the county commissioners' allotments," said Leys. "We will wait until we have more information to make decisions and not make rash decisions."
