Relay for Life, a local fundraising activity of the American Cancer Society, will take place this weekend, Friday and Saturday, at Alleghany High School's Woodruff Field.

Events will begin at 6 p.m. Friday with the opening ceremony and convocation and will end at noon on Saturday.

Local co-chairperson Ellen Wright said that she is looking forward to a successful event this year. The goal for the fundraiser has been set at $40,000, and teams and sponsors are well on their way to hitting that mark.

So far, in excess of $20,000 has already been raised for the event, with donations and other efforts continuing.

"We really appreciate all of our sponsors," Wright said. "With their help, we are well on our way to meeting our goal."

Forming a Relay For Life team involves organizing a group of at least 10 members. Each participant is asked to raise at least $100 — money that will be used to support the American Cancer Society's research and educational programs across the nation.

The relay's co-chairs, in charge of organizing the event, are Ellen Wright and Kaye Royall. This year's theme is "Favorite TV Shows" and all participants are invited to dress up themselves and their campsites to reflect this theme. Prizes will be given for the ‘best dressed' campsite.

There are 25 teams signed up this year to participate in the relay. Entertainment for the two day event will include Alleghany Moon, the Mountaineer Millennium Musicians, Ellen Church, Annette Evans and Tarra Walker.

"These talented folks have volunteered their time and will begin performing during the opening ceremony at 6 p.m. on Friday and will continue into Saturday," Wright said.

The opening ceremony will include a survivor's walk, in which area cancer survivors walk a lap in celebration of their accomplishments.
