Schools herald end-of-grade tests

Alleghany County Schools officials heralded end-of-grade test results last week, as at least 94.5 percent of elementary school pupils tested have passed both the reading and mathematics 'gateways' needed to be promoted.

Veteran of War of 1812 is honored

The service of a Traphill man in the War of 1812 was recognized June 2 in a special graveside ceremony in Stone Mountain State Park.

Town approves budget after a ‘silent’ hearing

The Sparta Town Council on June 5 approved a budget of $1,659,942 for 2001-02 and set the tax rate at the same level it has been for most of the last 20 years. Utility rates will also be unchanged.

NCNR buys 97 acres near Todd

The National Committee for the New River (NCNR) has purchased a critical 97-acre tract of river-front land in Todd for preservation. With over 4,300 feet of forested river frontage, protecting this land contributes to preserving the South Fork of the New River's High Quality Water designation from the state, important wildlife habitat, and the scenery in the Todd community.

Entries are encouraged for Sparta July 4 parade

Local officials anticipate this year's Fourth of July Parade may be the most spectacular one yet. The downtown parade, organized by the Sparta Revitalization Committee, is scheduled for Saturday, June 30, beginning at 11 a.m.

Radon in local water found to be in high concentrations

Radon, a bi-product of radioactive uranium, has been found in high concentrations in wells in this area and around the New River's watershed in North Carolina and Virginia, according to a new report by the U.S. Geological Survey.

Volunteers continue work on Mountains to Sea Trail

Local volunteers are helping forge the Mountains to Sea Trail, a hiking path extending more than 900 miles from the western to the eastern end of North Carolina.

Relay is set for this weekend

Relay for Life, a local fundraising activity of the American Cancer Society, will take place this weekend, Friday and Saturday, at Alleghany High School's Woodruff Field.
