Budget released to commission without revenues

The overall budget request totals were made available for public inspection for the first time this budget year.

The requests are considered preliminary until addressed by the county commission.

The commissioners will likely hold workshops during the first week of June. All county meetings are open to the public. Workshops were tentatively set on June 6 and June 7, with the workshop beginning on June 6 at 3:30 p.m. and ending at 5:30 p.m.

The Thursday meeting time was not clear, but it seemed likely to begin at 3:30 p.m. and end with the board of education's budget. The county typically tries to discuss that budget last, since it is one of the largest and involves dealing with another board of elected officials.

The commission's regularly scheduled monthly meeting will be held on June 4 beginning 6:30 p.m.

County Manager Don Adams said during the meeting that county will need one full day or two half days to hold the budget hearings with any department that wishes to plead its case before the commission.

Last week the county released numerous pages of budget materials to the newspaper, without the totals and organization that has now been completed as the process continues.

The budget requests were delivered to three of the county commissioners on Monday evening without the traditional budget message from the county manager that usually accompanies them. Not present at the meeting were J. Warren Taylor and Charity Gambill.

In addition, the revenue projections were not yet available. County Manager Don Adams said the state's budget crunch and the possibility that the state could withhold funds from the county means that the projections of revenue will not be available until a later time.

The budget books contained a breakdown of all requests as of Tuesday evening.
