Attendance was lighter than hoped at the National Committee for the New River's first subcommittee meeting in Sparta last week, but those present were enthusiastic about building involvement and awareness to help preserve the river.
About a dozen people turned out for the Little River sub-basin and main stem meeting May 1 at Sparta United Methodist Church's fellowship hall.
Jeffrey Scott, the committee's executive director, said the formation of subcommittees is necessary to protect the New River itself as well as its tributaries such as the Little River. "We have to get out in the smaller tributaries and work with backyard creeks," he said. Project Coordinator Debi Golembeiski said there are south fork committees in Ashe and Watauga counties.
Scott said he hopes to share ideas and build cooperation.
