Halsey seeks damages from board’s members

Former Piney Creek Elementary School teacher Barbara G. Halsey is suing the Alleghany County Board of Education, seeking tens of thousands of dollars in damages along with reinstatement, after dropping a civil action against the board last month.

The lawsuit, filed April 18, alleges the board’s decision last year not to grant Halsey career status was political, a retaliation for Halsey’s husband running for school board and unseating then-chairman Bobby Irwin. The board’s attorney has denied that charge.

Halsey said she taught for six years at Sparta Elementary School in the 1980s. She taught fourth grade at Piney Creek from 1998 to 2000.

Last June the board voted not to renew her contract. Halsey appealed that decision last summer.

School Board Attorney Fred Johnson said that on March 23, a hearing was held in Winston-Salem on the board’s motion to dismiss Halsey’s appeal.
