Local leaders expressed support and enthusiasm last week for Charleston Forge’s planned expansion in Sparta and the county’s work to help facilitate it.
The move was officially approved at the commissioners’ meeting on Monday.
The comments were made during an Alleghany County Board of Commissioners’ public hearing March 28 at the county courthouse.
About 25 people, mostly community leaders, were in attendance. County Manager Don Adams announced the expansion and the county’s proposed incentive package for Charleston Forge at the board’s March 5 meeting. The commissioners then scheduled the public hearing. The county plans to lease the facility formerly occupied by Carolina Narrow Fabrics to Charleston Forge, with an option for purchase. The 74,735-square-foot structure is located on Memorial Park Drive. The incentive package also includes an interest-free $210,000 loan to the company for renovations to the building.
Adams said state law allows local governments to participate in economic development.
