Two successful weekend events raised money and awareness for the ministry of Hospice of Alleghany.

The Whitehead Community Club garnered $3,021 for Hospice at its annual spring fundraiser last Friday night, according to club President Myrtle Taylor.

The fundraiser is an annual tradition, held the last Friday night of March, which began as part of a polio fund drive in the 1950s.

With the help of donations from local businesses, the 30-or-so club members work to make the event a success, and they select a worthy cause to help, said Taylor.

For the last three or four years, the proceeds have gone to Hospice of Alleghany, Taylor commented.

"The money raised stays in the county and helps local people," she said.

Uncle Nave Blevins and the Cranberry Creek Boys mixed music and comedy as part of “Heritage for Hospice.” They were joined for several songs by singer Sandra Myers of Laurel Springs. They are (from left) Greg Blevins, Richard Nichols, Myers, Nave Blevins and Johnny Shepherd.
