Local "stars" come out for talent show Saturday nightBy ROBBY LUCKEStaff Talent Show 2001 featured a wide gamut of entertainment, from Broadway show tunes to folk/country music, contemporary and traditional gospel songs, dance routines, dramatic skits and heavy metal rock. The show, sponsored by the National Art Honor Society of Alleghany High School and held last Saturday at Sparta Elementary School Auditorium, raised $1,300 for art scholarships. "I thought it was a success," said AHS art teacher Donna Link, who supervised the show and was master of ceremonies. "I'm real happy with the way it came off." She said about 400 people attended the event. A rock group composed of high school students Caleb Smith, Daniel Biggins and Matt and Joseph Ferraro won the $100 first place prize in the judged competition. The band performed three numbers, including a Dave Matthews Band tune. |

The $50 second place award went to T.J. Coleman and Cole Spicer, who performed "Dixieland Delight" on acoustic guitar with harmony vocals. Bloodline, a heavy metal group with members Matt Andrews, Jeff Custer, Brian Wray and Eric Moore, took third place, worth $25. They performed "Turn the Page," "No Leaf Clover" and "Don't Lie." Four-year-old Sadie Brown was the program's youngest performer and an audience favorite. She sang "Tomorrow" from "Annie", complete with red dress and Shirley Temple-like hairdo. ' |
