INDEPENDENCE, Va.
Judson "Judd" Jennings Poe, a Piney Creek man charged with aggravated involuntary manslaughter, has been given a court date of April 12.
Poe, 22, is scheduled to appear before a circuit court judge, in lieu of a jury trail. Poe asked for the bench trial last Thursday and his request was granted by Judge J. Colin Campbell without protest from the prosecutor, J.D. Bolt.
Poe was charged after the pickup truck he was driving collided with a trailer being pulled behind a farm tractor on U.S. 58.
Gayle Cox Phipps, a farmer from the Gold Hill community, died on Sept. 8, 2000 after the collision. Phipps' tractor overturned after Poe's vehicle struck the trailer.
The trial is expected to last about half a day.
