Auction is short of goal

The 34th annual Heart Auction raised $7,543 last Saturday, for a two-weekend total of $13,368.

The figure was short of the $15,000 goal and more than $1,000 under the amount raised last year.

Virginia Setzer, who has led the auction every year, said she expects more to be added to the total as a result of the Heart Association's newspaper ad campaign.

Referring to Alleghany Heart Association volunteer Cornelia Reeves, Setzer said,"Cornelia and I have agreed that when we have done our best, that is sufficient."

The auction originated from radio station WCOK, which also broadcast the event live.

The highest bid for an item Saturday was $330 for an uncirculated 1882 Carson City silver dollar donated by Sparta Mayor John H. Miller.

"It seems like money was making money for us," said Setzer. Buffalo nickels, 50-cent pieces and other silver dollars were sold during the auction. A quilt made by New Haven Quilters brought $300; a bedroom ensemble went for $190; a band saw, $105; and a graphite-titanium golf driver, $100.

A one-year pass to the future Alleghany Wellness Center was valued at $480.
