Senator to visit county

U.S. Senator John Edwards will be visiting Alleghany County today at 11:30 a.m.

Edwards is scheduled to appear at the Laurel Springs Volunteer Fire Department and the public is invited to attend the event. The event at the fire house is slated as a town hall meeting.

Edwards is scheduled to be in Ashe County at the Fleetwood Elementary School at 10:15 a.m. A press release sent out by Edwards last Friday slated his arrival time to Alleghany at 11:45 a.m.; however, local officials said that he is expected to arrive here at 11:30 a.m.

After leaving Alleghany, Edwards is to appear at the Wilkes County Regional Medical Center in North Wilkesboro at 1:30 p.m. His next scheduled stop will be at the Mount Airy Town Hall at 3:30 p.m.

His visit to the county is set as part of a tour of western counties, including Ashe, Wilkes, Surry, Buncombe, Yancey, Mitchell and Avery. Edwards will begin the week with a tour of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on Tuesday and then travel to this area on Wednesday and Thursday.

On the Senator's agenda while in the area are promoting the College Fire Prevention Act, proposed new legislation to require fire sprinklers in student housing and promoting a bipartisan Patient Protection Act that he and Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona) are sponsoring.
