The 34th annual Heart Fund Auction will be broadcast live on 1060 (WCOK AM) the next two Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The auction may also be heard on Alleghany Cablevision Channel 8 (audio only).
As she has every year, Virginia Setzer will lead the auction. She will be assisted by heart fund volunteers Cornelia Reeves, David Smith, Debbie Williams, Sandy Carter, Terry Atwood, Louise Evans, Marion Adams and others.
"Heart and cardiovascular disease remain America's number one killer," said Reeves. "Many of the modern techniques in the fight against heart disease, such as angioplasty, have been developed with the assistance of medical research funded by the American Heart Association."
Among the more unusual items available in the auction are body massages donated by Helen Delp Kelley. Born and raised in Turkey Knob, Kelley spent 20 years in Florida, where she became a licensed masseuse after 1,000 hours of massage school.
Other items donated so far include daylilies and hostas from state Sen.
Virginia Foxx, a 61-piece set of international fine China dinnerware,
computer training or repair sessions from PC Works, a bedroom ensemble
featuring a queen-size bed, pottery by Mangum Pottery and Hoffman
Pottery, a snow-scene painting by Peg Saunders, life-size cut-outs of
Dale Earnhardt and wrestler Bill Goldberg, videos from Video Wiz, NASCAR
memorabilia from James Parsons and Randy and Margaret Williams, a tennis
racket from Revis Eller, a graphite-titanium golf driver from Larry
Setzer, passes to the Burgiss Barn, hand-made quilts, appliances and
various home-baked and canned foods. Several donations were anonymous.
