The Sparta Town Council on Feb. 6 agreed to pursue a grant from the state parks department to help purchase the site of the Atwood building next to Floyd Crouse and Sarah Ellen Gambill Crouse Park.

Town Manager Tom Douglas suggested the town could use the land to expand the park. "I think if we had it level, there are a million things we could do with that site to enhance Crouse park," he said.

He said the site, located at the intersection of N.C. 18 and Grayson Street, is about eight-tenths of an acre. It is owned by D.W. Miles, and the building is being used for storage.

Douglas said the land is available for sale at a price of $150,000. "In my opinion it would be negotiable," he added.
