Alleghany County has applied to be listed among counties nationwide that have been adversely affected by the North American Free Trade Agreement. County Manager Don Adams said Tuesday that an application was filed to have the county listed as a "NAFTA distressed county."
Alleghany has lost 650 jobs within a period of just over a year, Adams said.
If the county is listed among those that are economically distressed due to NAFTA, it may be eligible for low-interest loans and other assistance to help stimulate business here.
The loan funds, which are available at interest rates of five to six
percent on average, would be available within a month if all goes well.
The loans are being made through the Community Adjustment and Investment
Program.
