The Alleghany County Board of Commissioners agreed unanimously to hire an Ocean Isle Beach man to fill the position of tax administrator.
Selected was Greg Taylor, who is currently working as the town manager in Ocean Isle Beach, located in Brunswick County. Taylor has been the manager there for about five years.
His official date of beginning work will be Feb. 26; however, he will not be in Alleghany until the first Monday in March. He will be taking a real-estate appraisal course at the Institute of Government in Raleigh prior to coming here.
His pay rate has been set at at grade 72, step 14, which equates to $40,324.19 per year.
"We're getting what we pay for," County Manager Don Adams said. "We looked at a number of factors before approving the salary. We're very pleased to have him on board."
Adams noted that the county has incurred large training expenses in the past with high turnover rates. The county has typically paid around $32,000 for the position, but Adams said other costs incurred by high turnover will make up the difference.
"We took a really good look at people from this county or from this
area," Adams said. "We wanted someone who wants to live here."
