INDEPENDENCE, Va. - A 59-year-old former Sparta resident was killed in a shooting in her Grayson County home early last Thursday morning.
Killed in the incident was Linda H. McKnight, wife of Joe Paul McKnight. The incident allegedly occurred on Deerwood Lane, just east of Independence. She was in the basement of the home near the bottom of the stairs.
According to information from the Grayson County Sheriff's Department, an E-911 call at 1:15 a.m. alerted deputies to the incident. Joe McKnight is said to have made the call. He works the late shift at Nautilus in Independence.
Also called to the scene were investigators with the Virginia State Police crime lab unit. Around midday Thursday, a state police tracking dog was brought to the scene.
No arrests had been made as of presstime. The victim was shot more than once and no weapon was recovered at the scene, investigators said. No further information on the crime was available.
