A mobile home located in the "Joe Place" development was destroyed by fire late Sunday night, according to Glade Creek Fire Chief Tim Duncan. Duncan said the home, which was owned by John Shafer, was fully engulfed when firemen arrived at the scene after getting the call at 11:10 p.m. No one was living in the home at the time of the fire, but many of Shafer's possessions remained in the home, Duncan said. He noted that there was no insurance on the mobile home.

A Glade Creek fireman, Steve Reese, went outside to get something out of his pickup truck at his home nearby and noticed the glow of the flames, Duncan said. Reese checked it out and then called in to dispatch for assistance.

As for the cause of the fire, Duncan said that it remains undetermined. Fire inspectors were unable to determine a definitive cause for the blaze.

Brush fire extinguished behind Sparta Post Office

Debris burning resulted in a fire which scorched two acres Monday near the intersection of Lee and Taylor streets.

The blaze broke out about 4 p.m. and was contained by firemen within one-half hour.

About 15 firefighters from Sparta/Alleghany Fire Department were on the scene for about an hour with three trucks, according to Chief Terry McGrady.

Two N.C. Forestry Service personnel were also on the scene. Cherry Lane firemen were called to the scene, but were turned away after the fire was brought mostly under control. Early on, firemen were concerned about the blaze reaching homes or the Sparta Post Office, which is near the area where the fire broke out.
