Edwin Moore "Ed" Woltz, a Mount Airy attorney, has been hired to fill a vacancy with the county commission.

Woltz will be taking over the position of county attorney that was formerly held by Bynum Marshall, who left the post to accept a position with Lowe's Companies, Inc. in Wilkes County.

Woltz was appointed by the county commission earlier this month on an unanimous vote after the commissioners searched for an attorney for about a month.

"I am just pleased that we found someone with local government experience," County Manager Don Adams said. "We had good quality interest in this position this year."

Woltz has experience in serving county governments, including a four-year stint as the Surry County attorney that stretched from 1994 through 1998. He also has a private practice in Mount Airy, which he has operated since 1993.

Prior to 1993, he was a partner in the law office of Woltz, Lewis & LaPrade, also in Mount Airy.

Woltz graduated from Mount Airy High School in 1976 and graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a bachelor's degree in business administration prior to receiving his law degree from Wake Forest University. Woltz represents a number of Surry County businesses and boards and is a member of the Surry County Bar Association and the N.C. Bar Association.
