Cherry Lane Volunteer Firemen finally managed to contain a fire behind The Posh Fox in Roaring Gap after battling it for more than four hours, according to Chief Kenneth Miles.

The call came in just before 4 p.m. last Thursday, Miles said, and firemen were on the scene in less than 10 minutes.

Destroyed in the blaze was an outbuilding that was formerly used for a barn but had been converted to other kinds of storage. Items in the structure included tillers, mowers and other equipment, as well as pine needles and straw.

The business features a small retail shop as well as offering landscaping services.

Workers with the landscaping portion of the business were burning trash near the building when the fire got out of hand after it was left unattended.

"The best I can tell they just went off and left it," he said. "It got off into the grass and it ran up to the side of the building and set the building on fire."

Earlier, as the inferno raged, two Cherry Lane firemen (left) hose down
the flames to keep the fire from spreading.

The grass wasn't really all that high, Miles said. "They kind of keep it mowed down like a yard," he said.
