Land sales were down more than 20 percent from 1999 to 2000 in Alleghany County, while the dollar amount of residential construction dropped more than 10 percent.
Figures from the register of deeds office show 627 deeds with stamps-that is, deeds sold for money-last year. In 1999 there were 821 deeds with stamps. Value of land sold last year, based on stamp value, amounted to $35.2 million, down from $47.0 million in 1999.
The biggest month for sales last year was November, with $3,915,000. However, four different months during 1999 each had more than that, led by September 1999 with $5,695,5000.
April was the leanest month of 2000, with only $1,419,500 in sales. February 1999 had the lowest sale total of that year, $2,335,000.
According to building inspection department statistics, new residential construction totaled $14.8 million for 2000, compared to $16.8 million for l999.
Of the 2000 construction figure, $13,555,403 was for 122 single-family houses, while 30 duplex homes totaled $1,260,000.
Permits for mobile home construction amounted to $1.84 million last year, down from about $2.4 million in 1999.
