Fire destroys former Edwards homeplace on Memorial Park

A blaze that apparently started from a fireplace resulted in a total loss to an older remodeled home on Memorial Park Drive Dec. 3.

Bill to move lines at Grandview falls to town, county

The Town of Sparta and Alleghany County will have to pay to move power lines to make way for the widening of Grandview Drive, without the extra help they were hoping for from the state.

Land sales were down more than 20 percent from 1999 to 2000 in Alleghany County, while the dollar amount of residential construction dropped more than 10 percent.

Local tree growers enjoy strong year

Christmas tree sales were strong once again this past season, with demand exceeding supply as production in the county is "maxed out," according to Alleghany Cooperative Extension Christmas Tree Agent Jerry Washington.
