Recent snowfall leads to school schedule changes

Alleghany County school officials decided Dec. 20 to close schools early for the holidays due to last week's snowfall. "We've just decided there's no use fighting it," said Superintendent Duane Davis. "We can't put these kids out there and put them in danger." Exams scheduled for Dec. 19 and 20 at Alleghany High School will be taken Jan. 3 and 4, 2001.

The high school schedule is as follows:

The elementary schools will be following the regular calendar, with a teacher workday Jan. 2. Pupils are to return to school Jan. 3.

The elementary and high school schedules will be back in sync by Jan. 8, Davis said.

"It's important that (high school) students come back Jan. 2 for the review," he said.

Davis said that in the past, such a delay in exams has hurt students' results. "Experience says they won't score as well."

However, "my hope is that students will use the time over the holidays to study. If they'll apply themselves, they'll do even better," he said.
