Grad requirements reviewed at meeting

Alleghany High School officials briefed parents on new graduation requirements in a sparsely-attended meeting held Dec. 18.

Information covered included the different tracks to a diploma and the senior exit exam.

About 40 or 50 people attended the informational meeting, said AHS Assistant Principal Barbara Lyon, "not near as many as we hoped." Earlier that day, the school rescheduled the meeting from 7 p.m. to 6 p.m. because of a conflict with a band concert. Lyon said another meeting may be scheduled in the future.

Beginning with those who are now ninth graders, students will pursue one of four courses toward a diploma.

The multiple tracks were approved by the state board of education in August 1999.

"They have to choose fairly early," said Schools Superintendent Duane Davis, "so they can choose their curriculum."

Students may choose between career preparation, college technical preparation, and college/university preparation tracks. A fourth track, occupational, is available for some students with disabilities who have an individualized education plan.
