Elkin-based Frontier Energy has begun extending its natural gas lines toward the mountain counties, but service for Alleghany County is likely more than a year away.
"We just started up U.S. 421," Frontier's Customer Service Manager Larry Rich said. "We've got about eight miles of pipe in the ground between Boone and Wilkesboro."
Rich said the company expects to begin serving customers in Watauga County by late summer to mid-fall of 2001. "We feel like that's a very reasonable, doable time frame," he said, barring unforeseen circumstances.
Gas lines will be extended from Watauga to Ashe, then into Alleghany
County.
