Fire destroys Piney Creek home

Three local fire departments were dispatched to battle a structure fire on 4051 Bakers Ridge Road on Dec. 23 around 12:15 p.m. - the day before Christmas Eve.

Sparta man charged with knife assault

A Sparta man was charged Dec. 22 with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, according to a warrant by Deputy Bryan Maines of the Alleghany County Sheriff's Department.

The Alleghany County Board of Commissioners will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, Jan. 2, at 6:30 p.m. to discuss a plan that could bring public transportation to the county.
