Mobile home is damaged in fireAn electrical fire resulted in a total loss to a house trailer on Dan Osborne Road last Saturday night. Chief Terry McGrady of the Sparta/Alleghany Fire Department said no one was at home when the fire broke out around 7 p.m. The victims of the fire were Gerald Perry, his wife and their four children, he said. The children range in age from three to 11. The residence was a trailer with an addition. Sparta Firefighter Tommy Calhoun said the fire probably started in the bathroom area in the middle of the main part of the structure. When firemen arrived, "There was a lot of smoke, but not a lot of flames visible," Calhoun said. "The structure was pretty heavily damaged," Calhoun said. However, one child's bedroom sustained mainly smoke and water damage. "They might be able to salvage the beds," he said. |

He said the Christmas tree in the home was blackened.
Firemen were on the scene about two and one-half hours. The Sparta department sent three trucks and 25 personnel. Laurel Springs assisted with one tanker and about 10 to 12 personnel.
Firefighters returned to the scene later that night to put out a
flare-up, McGrady said. They were on the scene about 15 minutes the
second time.
