School officials called testing and accountability requirements approved by the State Board of Education a challenge that will hit some pupils and parents hard.
The possibility that some students may have difficulties has led the school system to publicize the need for volunteers to tutor at-risk pupils.
According to the new requirements, pupils in grades three through eight are required to pass end-of-grade proficiency tests in reading and mathematics to be promoted to the next grade.
Superintendent Duane Davis said the state requires passing the tests at the end of grades three, five, and eight, but the county added the grades in between.
High school students are required to pass the North Carolina Competency
Test and a computer competency test.
