A 57-year-old Cana, Va. man injured in what has been ruled a hunting accident in Ennice died Sunday night at 10 p.m. in the intensive care unit at N.C. Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem.

Raymond Clinton Lineberry of Peak View Road succumbed to wounds sustained when he apparently shot himself in the leg with a 6mm rifle in a hunting accident Thanksgiving day. Lineberry had climbed into a tree stand and was attempting to pull up his rifle when it discharged after apparently hanging up on a limb, according to a report on file at the Alleghany County Sheriff's Department.

Lineberry made himself a make-shift tourniquet from his belt, but still lost large quantities of blood.

Soon after the accident, he was transported to N.C. Baptist Hospital by AirCare, which landed on Crestview Golf Course. Lineberry had to have his leg amputated after arriving at the hospital, sources say.

The bone in his leg was shattered and the flesh was severely lacerated by the bullet.

Lineberry was lucid at the scene and spoke briefly with Capt. Carlton Edwards before being transported to the hospital in the helicopter. Lineberry had been hunting in a wooded area near Highland Hills Drive with his son-in-law, Kenneth Branch of Ennice. Branch also works as the manager of the Sparta Food Lion grocery store.

An obituary for Lineberry appears on Page 10 of this week's edition.
